The Health Wagon and Regional Partners Provided 500 Thanksgiving Meals to Local Families
Dickenson County Higher Education Center Hosted November 20 Event
(Wise, Va.) — The Health Wagon, in partnership with Feeding Southwest Virginia, and Appalachian Harvest, distributed 500 complete Thanksgiving meals to families in need on Thursday, November 20, at the Dickenson Higher Education Center.
Thanks to generous community support from the Dickenson County Board of Supervisors, Anthem HealthKeepers, Luanne Picinich, Humana and other donors and regional food partners, 500 turkeys were ordered through IGA, with sides from Food City, and 1,000 food boxes—including 500 boxes from Feeding Southwest Virginia and fresh produce from Appalachian Harvest were available for distribution. Families received ready-to-cook Thanksgiving items, along with additional food resources and free items available on a first-come, first-served basis.
“Thursday’s Thanksgiving turkey meal giveaway at the Dickenson County Higher Education Center was an incredible success, with 500 families served. This was truly a community effort—made possible by the generosity, hard work, and heart of our volunteers, partners, and supporters,” said Dr. Teresa Tyson, DNP, MSN, FNP-BC, FAANP, President and CEO of the Health Wagon.
“Dickenson County is always proud of the work The Health Wagon does. They are the strongest community partner we have. I am proud to have helped make sure more than 500 of our families and children now have a full Thanksgiving meal. The outpouring of love and support and the strength of our County is amazing,” said Josh Evans, Dickenson County Circuit Court Clerk.
“Far too many children, seniors and families face hunger in Southwest Virginia,” said Pamela Irvine, President and CEO of Feeding Southwest Virginia. “This wonderful imitative helps nourish these neighbors in need with nutritious, holiday stapes they know and love. We are grateful for the support of the Health Wagon, for it is with their partnership that we may help hundreds of neighbors enjoy and look forward to this holiday season.”
“The Health Wagon is deeply grateful to everyone who helped ensure that families across our region can experience a warm and hopeful holiday meal. Together, we continue to lift one another up and care for our neighbors in the spirit of gratitude and compassion,” said Dr. Paula Hill-Collins, DNP, FNP-BC, FAANP
