RAM serves 1,349 patients, MOM 953 at Wise County event

WISE — The recent Missions of Mercy (MOM) free dental clinic in Wise provided more than $1.3 million worth of care to 953 patients, the Virginia Dental Association Foundation has reported.

Held in conjunction with the 19th annual Remote Area Medical (RAM) Health Expedition last month, the VDAF reports a total of 665 dentists, dental professionals and support volunteers from the Virginia Dental Association, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry and community participated in the annual VDAF MOM program in Wise County.

“We are thankful for the hundreds of volunteers that help make the Wise County Mission of Mercy a reality,” said VDA Executive Director and MOM founder Terry Dickinson. “Since the Mission of Mercy clinic started in Wise County in 2000 (as a partner in Wise County RAM), it has expanded to 31 other states. This year patients were able to receive free teeth cleanings and fillings and other other dental procedures in a more comfortable, air conditioned environment thanks to our partner (the University of Virginia’s College at Wise).”

VDAF’s MOM program moved its volunteer operations from the Wise County Fairgrounds for this year’s RAM event to the UVa-Wise Convocation Center.

RAM and its coordinating partner, the Health Wagon, were still tabulating the value of health services provided to all comers for free at the fairgrounds, but reported a total of 1,349 patients served, including an additional 449 receiving dental care that was also available at that location, 841 patients receiving medical care, and 581 recipients of free vision care services.See Full Article
