The Health Wagon is thrilled to announce the outstanding success of the 4th Annual Davey’s Back-to-School Shuffle, held on Aug. 1st at the Shelcy Mullins Sr. Fairgrounds. This year’s event brought the community together for a joyful day of giving and celebration, helping over 500 families prepare for the upcoming school year and setting new records for participation and impact.
With over 2,000 attendees, the event distributed 1,200 backpacks filled with essential school supplies to children, ensuring they have the tools needed for academic success. The day was packed with exciting activities, including the much-anticipated Davey’s Shuffle dance contest, where 20 bicycles were awarded to the talented winners. Raffle prizes added to the excitement, with lucky participants taking home items such as drones, toys, and gift certificates.
The success of this event was made possible by the generous contributions and support of our dedicated volunteers, local businesses, and sponsors, including the United Breast Cancer Foundation. In all, they contributed over $110,000 worth of items to our community, including:
- 1,200 backpacks
- Over 200 household items
- Over 1,500 clothing items
- Over 300 pairs of shoes
- 20 bicycles
- Various makeup items, hygiene products, and baby essentials
Additionally, Medicaid/FAMIS eligibility screenings were provided, thanks to a grant supported by the Virginia Health Care Foundation, ensuring families have access to essential health insurance coverage.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our volunteers, local churches, and community sponsors who united to make this event a resounding success. Special thanks go to our major sponsors:
- Shelcy Mullins Sr. Fairgrounds
- Natural Resource Services
- United Breast Cancer Foundation
- Adrian Collins Law Firm
- Lawton Mullins
- Vast Lens Photography
- Zion Church Drama Team
- Adam Hughes and Friendly Tires
- All the staff and volunteers from the Health Wagon, St. Mary’s Clinic, St. Mary’s Faith Pharmacy, and the Owens-Hill Dental Health Clinic
A special acknowledgment goes to a longtime friend and volunteer who traveled from Lynchburg, Va., to ensure each child received a Bible as they entered the event. Becky Curtis has been honored as the Unsung Hero Volunteer of the Year. Becky’s dedication, hard work, and passion have made a significant impact on our community and this event. Her tireless efforts have ensured that over a thousand children start the school year with the supplies and support they need.
This event, named in honor of David Meade, Health Wagon’s late Development Director who devoted his life to planning community outreaches, is a testament to our commitment to addressing the social determinants of health and fostering a supportive, healthy environment for our community.
