More than 40 years ago, Sister Bernadette “Bernie” Kenny embarked on a mission to bring mobile healthcare to underserved communities in rural Virginia. Starting with a red 1968 Volkswagen Beetle, she traveled the curving roads of Appalachia, carrying supplies and medications to provide free healthcare to those in need.
Sister Bernie’s innovative vision led to the founding of The Health Wagon in 1982, which has since grown into a lifeline for the region, offering over $4 million in medical care annually to more than 10,000 uninsured or underinsured patients. Her enduring legacy includes expanding access to healthcare, introducing groundbreaking initiatives like drone medication delivery, and inspiring countless lives with her compassion and dedication.
Today, The Health Wagon continues to honor Sister Bernie’s mission by addressing healthcare disparities in Southwest Virginia.
