The goal of Child Protective Services (CPS) is to identify, assess, and provide services to children and families in an effort to protect children, and whenever possible, preserve families, and prevent further maltreatment. Anyone may report suspected child maltreatment to local departments of social services or to the statewide child abuse and neglect hotline 24 hours per day, seven days a week. DENTAL SERVICES

CLINCH RIVER HEALTH SERVICES (Dungannon): A family dental program is available to eligible patients. Southwest Virginia United Way and other sources fund this program. Call (276) 467-2201.

LENOWISCO HEALTH DISTRICT (Virginia Department of Health): Licensed dentists provide public health dental services which include diagnostic, preventive, and restorative treatment to eligible children in each county. No routine dental work for adults can be accommodated. Adults must be a permanent resident of the county in which emergency treatment is given and bring proof of income to the appointment. Emergency adult indigent dental care is provided by appointment only and is provided as time permits, as preventative dentistry for children is the clinic priority. SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA REGIONAL DENTAL CENTER: This is a teaching facility in Saltville, Virginia which provides dental care. They operate through Southwest Virginia Community Health Systems, Inc. To make an appointment, call 276-496-4492 or 888-531-8354.

VIRGINIA MEDICAID: The Smiles For Children program (1-888-912-3456, DentaQuest) provides coverage for diagnostic, preventive, restorative and surgical procedures, as well as orthodontia services for Medicaid, FAMIS and FAMIS Plus children. The program also provides coverage for limited medically necessary oral surgery services for adults (age 21 and older).

Virginia Smart Choices Nutrition Education Program (SCNEP) is through the U.S.D.A. and assists households in making healthier food choices and helps people become effective managers of available food resources. Our local SCNEP representative will do presentations regarding the program to groups and will also visit homes to do one-on-one nutrition education. CHURCH OF GOD OF PROPHECY, COEBURN: Donates to the food bank that is operated by Friendship Baptist Church, but may help those in need in extreme emergencies. Pastor is Titus Anderson, 276-395-6889.

FOOD BANK OF WISE COUNTY, INC.: Provides food to those in need living in Wise County and the City of Norton. The Big Stone Gap branch is located in the former Haynes Grocery building at 914 Wood Avenue, East (just past KFC) and is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The telephone number is 276-523-2110. The Norton branch is located at 5335 Esserville Road, next to Kids Central and is open Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The telephone number is 276-679- 3663.

FRIENDSHIP BAPTIST CHURCH: An emergency food bank that serves residents of the Coeburn area. No specific hours, but contact the church at 276-395-7170 and arrangements will be made to meet the needy person that day. They can possibly deliver to needy persons in the Coeburn area who do not have transportation. Pastor is Johnny Adkins.

HOPE CENTER: Provides food boxes once a month per family. Operated by the First Baptist Church of Coeburn. Open Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The Every Woman’s Life program provides free mammograms, clinical breast exams, PAP tests, and pelvic exams to women who qualify. If breast or cervical cancer is diagnosed through an Every Woman’s Life screening, treatment may be then be provided free of charge through Virginia Medicaid.
